What is bioinformatics?
Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to the management of biological information. Computers are used to gather, store, analyze and integrate biological and genetic information which can then be applied to gene-based drug discovery and development. The need for Bioinformatics capabilities has been precipitated by the explosion of publicly available genomic information resulting from the Human Genome Project. The goal of this project - determination of the sequence of the entire human genome (approximately three billion base pairs) - will be reached by the year 2002. The science of Bioinformatics, which is the melding of molecular biology with computer science, is essential to the use of genomic information in understanding human diseases and in the identification of new molecular targets for drug discovery. In recognition of this, many universities, government institutions and pharmaceutical firms have formed bioinformatics groups, consisting of computational biologists and bioinformatics computer scientists. Such groups will be key to unraveling the mass of information generated by large scale sequencing efforts underway in laboratories around the world.

According to me What is Bioinformatics?Two simple statements seem to suffice in order to create our definition of bioinformatics and make it reflect the future of the life sciences:1. We define bioinformatics as “a combination of Computer Science, Information Technology and Genetics to determine and analyse genetic information.” 2. It is important to include a highlight on the words determine and analyse. These are expressions which involve very real human elements. It is the interaction of the business strategist and the research scientist within a given set of partly-discovered biological rules and technology-lead solutions which truly governs the term bioinformatics and, therefore, life science.
What does a bioinformatician do?That varies! Some bioinformatics professionals are adept at using computer software packages that help design experiments, model complex biological systems/pathways/molecules and analyze copious amounts of data. Other bioinformaticians design and develop algorithms, software, and/or database systems to aid in managing biological information, data analysis or presentation of information in a form that can be used to communicate scientific findings. Some bioinformaticians serve as liaisons (or analysts) between scientists and software engineers. There are also positions that involve training users and supporting commercial biotech/bioinformatics software/hardware systems. The fields of genomics, proteomics and other high-throughput biological experimental systems are yielding vast quantities of data, and bioinformaticians play a key role in managing this data, and helping sift through the data to produce meaningful biological information.
